Now you have the idea what you want
to do for a business. By now you have already formulated a plan what it is that
will work out for you. You are now sure that this business you have in mind is
long term and that you are in this for the long run. Remember, there is no use for you to
be doing this, wasting your time and money, and then you will just drop it immediately when faced with
difficulty. You must be sure that this is what you like to do and the only
thing that you know well enough that would make it difficult for you to just drop it out. Make sure that you are really ready by
answering the questions above.Make a list, a game plan, a lots of strategic planning.
If you are ready then, ask your self these questions and enumerate in the details your perfect answers. Listen to your heart. Pay attention to your instinct. Follow your dreams.Put everything in papers as organized as it can be. If it is not on paper, it is only a dream.
Here are some of the questions:
1. What is the purpose of your business.
2. What is your business’ mission and vision statements?
3. What are the goals and objectives for your business?
4. What does your business want to accomplish?
Do your homework well. Research for more questions and answers. The internet provides a handy tool for anyone searching for answers to their questions and solutions for their problems. Keep asking more questions. Check out what is happening around you and around the world. There are places you can do this at very minimal cost if at all, like; the Libraries, Trade Associations, Chamber of Commerce, Federal Department and Agencies, State Departments and Agencies, City and County Governments, Banks and Financial Institutions, Realtors, Local and Regional Utility Commissions, Small Business Development Centers, Local radio and television stations and newspapers, and maybe students from campuses in the Universities.
It is vital for every business to create a business plan. This is the road map or a blue print of your business designed for your goals to succeed. Operating a business takes so much of you, your drive, your initiative; that, without a business plan to guide you, you would pretty much be like driving towards a road in a thick fog; unsure if you are driving through a clear road and not knowing if you could be bumping into something fatalistic. A business plan is required even if you do not have an employee. Business plans provide you with strategies and planning to achieve operational-management efficiency and profitability.
As a starting point, here’s what a business plan consist of:
1. What do I want to achieve in the next 1-3 years, 5 years, and 7 years?
2. How will I operate, manage, and run it? Will I go for partnership?
3. How much to I need to start operation from supplies, material, time, and energy?
4. What can my business do for my clients? Who are they?
5. Where and how can I seek financing for my business to keep operating? How much do I need?
6. How will I sell my product or service to the consumers?
7. How much profit do I make for each item or service?
8. What is my marketing plan and strategy?
9. Do I need to hire someone, a professional? How much would this cost?
10. How will I sell my business if I have to?
11. If there are changes in the social, economic, political, demographics, and environmental in the location or country I am conducting business, how will it affect me?
12. What are my plans to protect business in case of the changes in the list in no.11 will happen?
13. Who are my suppliers if any?
14. Who are my competitors, where are they, and how can I compete with them?
You may revise and add more to this list
once you have already achieved some progress and you are ready to bring your
business to the next level. There are also companies and business that can help
you in preparing your business plan for a fee.Again, the internet and the Yellow Pages comes in handy.
It is also advisable to incorporate and hire a reputable Lawyer or a C.P.A to guide you through the correct way of complying IRS tax regulations; especially if you are intending to hire employees or service contractors. If you are hiring employees or contractors, you may need to file for a Status Report at your State Employment Commission if it applies, and make use of I-9 forms or W-4. You could also join in and attend classes and training at the Small Business Development Centers in your area.
If your business requires a business license and permit as almost every business does, it is very important that you acquire one. Check your local Yellow pages and call for information and guidance.
You then have to apply for a tax account number with the name of your business and open a separate checking account. Never mix your personal money with your business money. In this way, you will know what you can afford or not.
There are also Small Business Tax Education programs provided by the IRS by inquiring their local office in your district and city. There are publications and guide to federal and state tax agencies that are helpful for you as well. Visit and stroll around these offices. And most of all, you can join other mentoring program groups with other business networking committees in your city or county. There are even business incubator programs to help start up businesses that are offered by banks and other business networking initiatives in your vicinity if you check it out carefully.
So, here you go. Good luck. Remember, everything starts with a dream, an idea. But when you act on it and plan well. You will be richly rewarded.

Excellent advice. Could have used it about 3 months ago when I was writing a business plan for my wife to take to the lender. She got her start-up loan but I almost had a nervous breakdown. Thanks

Well, everything mentioned is undoubtedly excellent. However, I suspect that there is one thing missing. Passion! Without feeling pasionate about your business you will fail - as sure as night follows day. Does no-one else think that passion is the single most important item to a start-up - and the quality that will sustain a business in its darkest moments?
